Patty Sorensen was born and raised in California. In 1975 she moved with her husband and two children to Richmond, VA, and then on to Houston, TX in 1978. In 1995, with her husbands' retirement, they relocated to Montgomery, TX.
Patty has always been involved with various forms of arts and crafts. For several years her passion was rubber stamping. Many of her cards were published in national rubber stamping magazines.
After purchasing a gourd plant and growing some small gourds, she became intrigued with gourd art. Patty no longer grows gourds, instead purchases them from gourd farms in California, Arizona, Louisiana and Texas. When Patty attended the Lone Star Gourd Festival in October 2005, she received her first instructions in gourd art. She soon discovered it is work that she truly enjoys. Since that time she has attended gourd festivals in California, Arizona, and Texas and received additional training in various art forms. The techniques and elements that she uses on her gourds include pyrography, carving, painting, inlaid/inlace, pine needle coiling, Navajo coiling on Danish cord & paper rush. It also includes weaving with different types of reeds and other various natural grown plants. She purchases the 9" - 10" pine needles from North Carolina. She has added basketweaving on gourds to her repertoire.
Patty has created several award winning art pieces, which are displayed and sold in galleries and private shows. She is a member of the American Gourd Society and the Texas Gourd Society . She has served as Secretary for the TGS in 2007, 2008 and 2009. She has been part of the Competition committee in 2007 and 2009. Patty belongs to the Southeast Gourd Patch. and feels blessed to have found gourd art to showcase her artistic talents.
